Immigrant workers contributed 143.9 billion euros ($148 billion) to Italy's economy, or 9 per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) last year, a new report showed.
Based on data from the National Institute of Statistics and other public institutions, the "Economics of Immigration" annual report by the Leone Moressa Foundation provided a range of insights into the role played by foreign-born workers and entrepreneurs on the domestic market, reports Xinhua news agency.
Out of 5.2 million immigrants residing in Italy last year, some 2,257,000 were employed, accounting for 10 per cent of the total workforce, the report said.

A new railway station near the Kanpur University, after elevating the Anwarganj railway track, will be named after late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
A proposal to this effect was made by Kanpur MP Satyadev Pachauri and Akbarpur MP Devendra Singh Bhole at a recent meeting with railway officials.
A railway release said that the Anwarganj-Madhana section would be elevated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday cautioned the G-20 leaders that today's fertiliser shortage could become tomorrow's food crisis as he strongly pitched for maintaining a "stable" supply chain for both manure and food grains.
In his address at the G-20 summit here, Modi also highlighted how India ensured food security for its 1.3 billion citizens during the Covid-19 pandemic while supplying food grains to many countries.
"The current shortage of fertilizers in terms of food security is also a huge crisis. Today's fertilizer shortage is tomorrow's food crisis, for which the world will not have a solution," Modi told the gathering which included US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron.

As the world population touched 8 billion on Tuesday, India was the largest contributor to the milestone, having added 177 million people, while China, whose contribution to the next billion in the global population is projected to be in the negative, the UN said.
India is expected to surpass China as the world's most populous nation by next year.
The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), in a special graphic to mark the global population reaching eight billion, said Asia and Africa has driven much of this growth is expected to drive the next billion by 2037, while Europe's contribution will be negative due to declining population.
The world added a billion people in the last 12 years. UNFPA said that as the world adds the next billion to its tally of inhabitants, China's contribution will be negative.
India, the largest contributor to the 8 billion (177 million) will surpass China, which was the second largest contributor (73 million) and whose contribution to the next billion will be negative, as the world's most populous nation by 2023, UNFPA said.

Thousands of CPI-M activists on Tuesday laid siege to the Raj Bhavan -- the official residence of Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan -- in protest against his refusal to ink Ordinances or Bills pertaining to the higher education sector.
Neither Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan nor his cabinet colleagues participated in the rally.
Vijayan and the Governor have been at loggerheads ever since he refused to ink Ordinances or Bills which are concerning the higher education sector.

In a relative relief the air pollution levels in Delhi came down to the 'poor' category from 'very poor', as the national capital recorded an AQI of 221 on Tuesday morning, as per System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research SAFAR.
The National Capital Region (NCR) also witnessed some improvement in the air quality as Gurugram fell in the 'Moderate' category with an AQI of 162 and Delhi Airport (T3) recorded 'poor' quality air with an AQI of 218. However, Noida continued to breathe in 'very poor' quality air as the AQI of the city stood at 302.
Speaking of other places, Dhirpur recorded an AQI of 303, Lodhi Road recorded 152 in the 'Moderate' category while Mathura road recorded an AQI of 232, and Pusa recorded an AQI of 186.

India has the potential to become the world leader in electric vehicles production, a research by Berkeley National Laboratory and UCLA said, underlining that making the transition from diesel-fuelled trucks to electric-charged will enable the country to meet the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070.
India imports 88 per cent of the oil it uses and of the total petroleum consumed by the country's transport sector, nearly 60 per cent used by freight trucks.
A study by the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on Monday revealed that electric trucks would be more affordable to operate than diesel and India could become a world leader in producing electric vehicles.

There should be no restrictions on energy supplies and stability in the energy market should be ensured, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday in remarks made at the G20 summit in Indonesia.
"India's energy security is also important for global growth," Modi was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Indian foreign ministry.
"Today's fertilizer shortage is tomorrow's food crisis, for which the world will not have a solution. We should make a mutual agreement to keep the supply chain of both fertilizers and food grains stable and assured," Modi said.
