A moderate intensity tremor rocked J&K on Tuesday, an official said, while authorities said no loss of life or damage to property has been reported from anywhere so far.
"A moderate intensity earthquake occurred at 7.12 pm. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.4 and its epicentre was in Tajikistan. The depth was 90 km. Its coordinates are latitude 37.6 north and longitude 72.1 east," Sonam Lotus, director of the Met department told IANS.
The tremors were felt in Kupwara district of the Valley and the Chenab Valley region of Jammu.
Authorities in both summer capital Srinagar and winter capital Jammu said no loss of life or damage to property has so far been reported from anywhere.
A temblor measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale struck Jammu and Kashmir on October 8, 2005 in which 40,000 people were killed in both the Indian and Pakistan administered parts.
