Incessant rains in the catchment areas had resulted in raising the water level in major dams and reservoirs in Chhattisgarh.

According to the data released by the state data centre of water resource department, 42 irrigation water-reservoirs in state have filled about 50 per cent of its capacity on average in the state. The reservoirs have capacity of 6266 million cubic metre, and till Friday evening, over 3000 million cubic meter of water had been collected.

The highest collection was recorded in the catchment of Minimata Hasdeo Bango reservoir in Korba district. According to officials, the dam had been filled 74.20 per cent to its total capacity. In fact, it was a matter of great relief for the authorities and the industrialists.

The facilities located in the Korba industrial areas besides Janjgir-Champa district and parts of Raigarh had been getting water from the Hasdeo Bango reservoir, considered to be the biggest dam in the state. The other big dam in Chhattisgarh, Gangrel, is located in Dhamtari district.

However, the water inflow had been slow in Gangrel dam that had been source of water for Bhilai Steel Plant-the flagship entity of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). As of now, Gangrel Dam is filled at 18.18 per cent of its capacity.

On average, the 42 dams and reservoirs across the state had been filled at over 50 per cent of the capacity. The officials said the control room set up at the major dams had been closing monitoring the increasing water level. The state had been received good rainfall soon after the monsoon broke.

The meteorology department records said that the state had recorded just double the rainfall in this season till June 25 as compared to the rains received during the corresponding period of last year.
