Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has asserted that she was not sure if justice was served in the Nirbhaya case, and added that the authorities need to 'keep an eye' on the juvenile once he is released next month.
"Let us not confuse justice with the law. The law said that he could only go to a children's home ... That's the anomaly we are trying to correct. So, he served his sentence and as per the law he is coming out. There is nothing we can do about it until or unless he commits another crime. So, that is all we can do," Maneka said in a press conference.
"As far as justice is concerned, I don't know if justice has been served but certainly the law has been adhered," she added.
She also asserted that the juvenile should be kept under watch.
"We can't just let him go and wait for him to do something else," she said.
The juvenile convicted in the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern on the night of December 16, 2012, will be released next month as his three-year term in the rehabilitation center is set to end.
Although he is scheduled to be released on December 15, the Delhi Government is pondering setting him free a week in advance fearing public outrage as he fears that he may be "lynched" after his release.
