The sudden jump in onion prices in Delhi has not impacted West Bengal so far and traders are not expecting rise in the retail price above Rs 60-70 a kg in markets here.

"We do not expect any further rise in onion prices in the retail markets from Rs 60 for regular quality and Rs 70 a kg for premium quality. Moreover, we expect prices will begin easing post Diwali," commodity market analyst and adviser to state government Shibu Malakar said.

A onion wholesaler here also corroborated it saying wholesale price at the Posta market remained at Rs 1,800-2,000 a tonne during the day.

"Only a small quantity of premium onions were sold at Rs 2,300-2,400 a tonne. This variety is selling at Rs 70 a kg in the retail market," the trader said declining to be quoted.

Onion prices in Delhi retail markets had touched Rs 80 a kg.

Supply in the city wholesale markets remained lower by 40-50 per cent as new crop is yet to hit market.

Nasik-based traders have blamed unseasonal rains as the cause for delayed harvest and new crop in the market.
