Chidambaram denied that India is working with US to dilute UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka

Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said the UPA government intends "to move amendments to the draft resolution on Sri Lanka in the UNHRC".

A day after DMK pulled out of the UPA government, Chidambaram spoke at a press conference where he said that India's position is that UNHRC should adopt a strong resolution on Sri Lanka.

He also denied that India is working with US to dilute UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka and described the reports in this regard as a 'canard'.

"Tamil sentiments can be represented only through an appropriate resolution in Parliament ," Chidambaram said and further added that "DMK was aware of government's position on UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka but changed its mind between night of March 18 and morning of March 19".

The Finance Minister also brushed off talks UPA numbers in the lower house are in a zone of uncertainty and expressed confidence that the government has "enough support" in Parliament to pass economic reforms bills.

Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath also said that the "government is absolutely stable, not a lameduck one". "I am sure on the merits of reform bills, political parties will support the government," he said

He declined to comment on the possibility of early elections.
