External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday asserted that the safety and security of Indians is the top most priority of the government as many cases of hate crimes were reported in the US recently.

"I was not well. But, I personally contacted Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Deep Rai's family. The safety and security of Indians staying abroad is our top most priority," Swaraj said in Parliament.

"US authorities, including President Donald Trump have strongly condemned these incidents.  I also raised these issues with highest authorities in US," Sawaraj said while rubbishing the Opposition's claim that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government was quite on the issue.

A few days ago, Deep Rai, a Sikh man was shot and wounded in his own driveway in Kent, Washington by a white man in half-mask who told him to “go back to your country”. In another incident, Srinivas Kuchibhotla was shot in Kansas. Bystander said the man shouted "get out of my country" before shooting him.
