There is much left to do

As François Hollande, the president of France, watches the Indian Army march in harmony on Rajpath and cranes his head to watch the orchestrated flypast by the Indian Air Force, all Indians have to ask themselves what else remains to be achieved by the republic which will be 67 on January 26.

The answer is: A lot. Infant mortality continues to be one of India's most shaming statistics. And, despite lore about the place of women in ancient and modern India, crimes against them continue to rise, unfettered by laws, and in some cases, legitimised by societal mores.

True, the world is not perfect. But, while India has come a long way, these are reminders that much remains to be done
