AIADMK MLA and candidate for Madathukulam assembly constituency in Tirupur district C Shanmughavelu was admitted to government hospital after he sustained head injury following clashes with DMK workers over alleged distribution of money to voters.
According to police, AIADMK workers led by Shanmughavelu surrounded a house at Udukkampalayam where his rival candidate and Highways minister M P Swaminathan (DMK) and his supporters were meeting voters last night.
AIADMK workers alleged that the minister was distributing money to entice voters, which was denied by DMK volunteers there leading to a brawl between workers of the two parties, police said.
Stones were hurled at each other and in the melee, Shanmughavelu sustained head injuries.
He was taken to government hospital in Udumalpet, police said, adding workers from both parties were also admitted to hospital.
