The petroleum ministry is contemplating developing green energy corridors across the country. The corridors in the northern region are Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Haridwar and Delhi-Agra. Similar green corridors are proposed for Allahabad-Kanpur-Varanasi, Bengaluru-Mumbai-Pune and Andhra Pradesh.

The ministry is planning to extend the network of green fuels like compressed natural gas to these cities.

“We are planning green energy corridors,” said Dharmendra Pradhan, petroleum minister, on the sidelines of a seminar on biofuels. “We have not achieved the desired results in biofuel blending,” he  noted. Blending of biodiesel with diesel had not started and blending bioethanol with petrol was restricted to three per cent, he added.

“We need to increase biofuel consumption and production to reduce the import bill. Our government is focused on promoting biofuel blending,” Pradhan said.

He added the Centre was also planning to supply smart cities with green energy. “A smart city should have smart energy and gas-based energy is the preferred choice. So we are planning to extend green fuels to upcoming green cities proposed by the Centre,“ he said.
