China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) has bagged the contract for the supply of 69 coaches to the Nagpur Metro, by beating BEML and Titaghar Wagon with the lowest bid of Rs 851 crore. Nagpur Metro Rail Project will consist of 38.215 Km metro corridor, 36 stations and 2 depots. The entire stretch will be divided into north-south and east-west corridors.

The letter of intent was handed over on Saturday to the company Vice President Zhang Min Yu by Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) Managing Director Brijesh Dixit in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur.

Besides, CRRC under the Make In India project proposes to invest Rs 1500 crore in phases for the establishment of rolling stock manufacturing unit in Butibori industrial estate near Nagpur. Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation will provide about 150-200 acres of land for the upcoming unit. Memorandum of understanding was signed by the state Development Commissioner Vijay Singhal while CRRC was represented by Zhang Min Yu. CRCC has already supplied coaches for metro projects in Ghaziabad and Gurgaon.

Dixit told Business Standard,''CRRC has been awarded the contract to design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of passenger rolling stock with annual maintenance for 10 years. There will be 23 trains of 3 cars each. The cost per car is Rs 10.41 crore excluding annual maintenance contract. It is a new benchmark for the lowest cost in the country.''

He informed that there will be stainless steel car body with long life and low maintenance. Besides, coaches will be equipped with automatic doors with obstacle detection feature, fully air-conditioned, 66 per cent powering supply with more than 30 per cent energy regeneration. ''The coaches will be wi-fi enabled with communication-based train control,'' he noted.

Dixit said the metro rail, which entails an investment of Rs 7,800 crore, will be completed in phases by the end of financial year 2018-19.
