The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has appeared in the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) audit report on the Commonwealth Games, tabled in the Parliament on Friday.
The CAG report criticised the Business Club of India (BCI), a joint body of the CWG Organising Committee (OC) and the CII, for incurring expenditure but failing to generate revenue. The BCI had spent huge sums in organising road shows across the globe during the Queens Baton relay and by providing discounts to its members for CWG tickets.
“Despite incurring expenditure of Rs . 3.08 crore (Rs 0.45 crore on road shows worldwide, and discounts of Rs 2.63 on tickets for BCI members), no revenue whatsoever was generated through the club,” the report said. CII officials refused to “immediately” comment on the CAG report. The BCI was formed to support marketing efforts for the CWG. The OC had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the CII in August 2006 to form the BCI.
