In a move to revitalise traditional industries in the state, the Coir Board has set up a training and service centre in the district. M Baskaran, Kozhicode mayor, inaugurated the centre on the premises of Regency Building here.

Addressing mediapersons after the inauguration, Coir Board chairman A C Jose urged the state government to restore 20 percent rebate on coir and allied products. Over 2.5 crore coir products were lying idle throughout the state, he said.

The new centre will give training to rural artisans in latest technology in the coir industry.

"The new centre will have 10 trained technicians to provide services to coir industries in Kozhikode and Kannur districts. It will also act as the technology transfer centre by providing the latest technology developed by the Coir Board through various research and development programmes to coir co-operative societies and small-scale coir manufacturing units in the district. The board has also established a sales outlet at Kozhikode to help promote domestic market.

"The major benefit of the centre is that it will train rural technicians to equip them with skills to attend to minor technical problems in coir processing machinery," deputy director of the board, P C Antonel Vaz told Business Standard.

The Coir Board is also planning to establish a marketing network to tap the huge domestic market. In the last financial year, the board generated a revenue to the tune of Rs 1,200 crore from the domestic market.

Though the coir industry has generated whopping Rs 508 crore revenue through exports, the industry is lacking skilled technicians considering the competition.
