Congress president Sitaram Kesari yesterday said his party was keeping a close watch on the functioning of the United Front government at the Centre and would alert it whenever it goes wrong.

He was committed to the CWC's decision to extend unconditional support to the Deve Gowda government, Kesari told reporters here.

On his questioning by CBI recently, he merely said he had declared his assets publicly.

Later addressing a poll meeting here, the Congress chief said coalition experiments had failed both at the Centre and states on several occasions.

He said the Akali-BJP alliance for the coming Punjab assembly poll was unholy and would not last long.

Kesari appealed to people to vote for his party as only the Congress could maintain peace prevailing in Punjab.

Blaming the Akalis for the decade-long militancy in the state, he said they honoured those who killed innocent people. The Akalis, if voted to power, would push Punjab back into uncertainty, Kesari said.

He said those who talk about corruption should declare their assests as he had done after becoming the AICC chief.

Kesari lauded the role of Punjabis in the country's freedom struggle and urged them to take the slogan of Hindu-Sikh bhai bhai to every nook and corner of the state.
