Complimenting Chatterjee for being an excellent Speaker, Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said, "He has been an exceptionally good Speaker and exceptionally fair."
Natarajan said Chatterjee did not belong to any party as he lost the affiliation of his party after being elected as the Speaker.
The Congress spokesperson said he was elected as the Speaker not by the Congress but by the UPA and was supported by the entire House.
Replying to a volley of questions on the expulsion of the Speaker from his party, Natarajan described the situation as "unprecedented" but said it was the internal matter of the party and she had no comments on it.
Asserting that there was no question of a new Speaker, she said Chatterjee's expulsion from the party would have no bearing on his continuation as the Speaker.
