A major fire accident today caused extensive damages at the construction site of Essar Steel plant near Paradip. Sources said, the mishap occurred at the newly constructed electric sub-station at Essar plant due to short–circuit. After hearing about incident many employees and labourers left the plant site fearing the spread of fire to other parts of the plant.

One security guard was seriously injured in the mishap. IIC of Paradip police station Anil Mishra said ‘there is no cause of panic because eight fire tenders from different industries have been pressed into service to control the fire. One security guard was injured in the fire fighting operation. The cost of damage has not been ascertained yet”, he added. Entire sub-station, and its oil, electrical cables, wires and other equipments were gutted. Unconfirmed sources put the cost of damage at more than Rs 1 crore.

It may be recalled that in March’2011 last, another major fire had occurred at the construction site of Essar Steel plant in which property worth Rs 1 crore was destroyed. High grade electrical cables, plastic and fiber materials were gutted in the mishap. A spokesman of the company said, all efforts have been taken the authority to bring the situation under control. There is no causality and everybody in the site is safe. The cause of fire mishap is yet to be ascertained.
