Goa drops bridge proposal

Official sources told Business Standard that the state government has decided not to go ahead with the project proposed to be constructed on built, own, operate and transfer basis following the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) declaration that the existing bridge across the river is safe enough for vehicular traffic of up to 12 tonne.
With this assurance from the central agency, the government has decided to throw open the bridge to vehicular traffic by the end of the month after receiving the final report from CRRI.
Moreover, the tourism season, which has already begun in the state, would have suffered if the bridge remains closed to traffic.
Another reason for dropping the idea is due to the proposed six-lane expressway as part of which a bridge will come up. This would anyway render the Zuari bridge redundant, said officials.
The state government had announced the steel bridge in mid-July following the closure of Zuari bridge to vehicular traffic of above 6 tonne.
The parallel bridge over Zuari river was to be constructed in four-month's time and was to be made operational by mid-November.
