The West Bengal BJP today said that Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, who has taken the initiative to solve the Singur impasse, might not agree to be the mediator.
"He has Constitutional limitations to be the mediator in resolving the Singur issue," state BJP president Satyabrata Mukherjee told newsmen here today on Gandhi writing to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee who, in turn, sought gubernatorial initiative.
Stating that industry in the state would suffer a setback if the Tatas withdrew the Nano small car project from Singur, Mukherjee said it also sent a wrong message out to entrepreneurs and industrialists.
He suggested the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government provide alternate land and compensation to farmers unwilling to part with their land for the project at Singur.
The state government should also disclose the agreement with the Tatas on the small car project, he said.
"We, too, are for industrialisation but there should be transparency. It is hard to understand why the government is concealing the agreement," he said.
"I met the chief minister on 28 August and he assured me that he will disclose everything within seven days on the website. Let's see what he does," the senior BJP leader said.
