Demonetisation: Govt teams to make countrywide assessment by Friday

In the wake of a flow of reports on citizen hardship in withdrawing and depositing of cash from banks, all over the country, the government on Monday set up committees of officials to check on implementation at the ground level. 

Comprising additional secretaries, joint secretaries and directors, it will visit states and Union Territories, with a focus on rural areas. They would visit the states allocated for at least two days and give their reports to the department of economic affairs by Friday.   

The teams will assess the availability of currency in the network of bank branches, ATMs and post offices. They will also take stock of facilities at bank branches and post offices for deposit, withdrawal and exchange of currency.

Also, the status of calibration of ATMs to dispense new Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 currency notes, beside assessing the impact on various segments. And, may take up any other issue they consider important.
