Minister for Medical Education S A Ramadas said the bill to making one year rural service compulsory for the medical and nursing students would be tabled during the legislature session on July 21. This would help recruit the doctors and nurses in 2,800 Public Health Centres in the state

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday during his visit to the Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Science (DIMHANS) Ramdas said even the union government had appreciated this step and follow the suit. This would enhance the total period of MBBS course to six and a half years including one year of compulsory rural service.

Students would receive the certificates only after completing the rural service. Similarly, the bill to bring in amendments to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to check the malpractices would be tabled in the house this time, he said.

Ramadas stated that integrated system of medicine would be introduced at the government mental and neuro science institutes in Dharwad, Mysore and Bangalore and also at the Karnataka Medical Science Institute (KIMS) in Hubli.
