CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat today slammed the Congress for neglecting the welfare of minorities.

According to Karat, the Congress-led UPA government could not implement many of the recommendations of the Sachar Committee because of the fear of the BJP. Linking the need to fight communalism and terrorism together, the CPI(M) general secretary alleged that while the BJP represented “majority communalism”, innocent Muslims were falsely targeted for being part of terror attacks during the UPA rule.

While the Left-ruled West Bengal has a dismal record of minority welfare, Karat defended his state government, saying that despite their efforts, the Planning Commission and the UPA government didn’t allow the sub-plan for minorities for special focus in areas like health and education. “Unless the Plan panel provides for this sub-plan, there can’t be much improvement of minorities,” Karat said.

While it talks about fight against communalism and terrorism, the CPI(M), however, is facing criticism for joining hands with PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madhani, a prime terror suspect in its backyard of Kerala.
