Mediatronics develops e-Braille solution

Webel Mediatronics launched a pioneering computerised Braille transcription system which offered a comprehensive solution for the visually impaired in areas of reading, writing, teaching, learning and printing and for communication and rehabilitation.
 
It covers transcription in 12 Indian languages - Hindi, Assamese, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Nepali and Bengali - as also English, the company stated in a release.
 
The system comprises hardware and software systems to address the problems of conventional Braille printing system in terms of speed, convenience and cost.
 
The system was being installed in over 100 blind schools throughout India covering 22 states and 13 Indian languages. West Bengal has equipped 2 libraries and 27 special schools with the system.
 
Nearly 500 teachers have already been trained about computer fundamentals and the software and hardware developed and installed. They in turn have trained another 3,600 people.
 
Department of information technology, Government of West Bengal, and the central ministry of communications and information technology sponsored the project.
 
"TextBraille, MathBraille, EasyBraille, BrailleExam, Interface Software, BrailleWriter & Braille Keyboard (BKB), Tact Braille, Automatic Braille Embosser, DirectBraille are among the software and hardware developed as a part of computerised Braille transcription system. This system is targeted to substantially augment the literacy level among the visually-impaired in the country and also assist in their communication with sighted people and rehabilitation", observed Shankar N Goswami, wholetime director of Webel Mediatronics.
