Mumbai airport on Monday opened its new common use domestic cargo terminal to cater the e-commerce led growth in volume.
The new terminal has an annual handling capacity of three lakh metric tonnes and will be used by all airlines except Air India and Blue Dart, which have own cargo handling facilities. The terminal will be run by Container Corporation of India on a revenue share basis with the airport operator.
"We are expecting to 7-8 per cent growth in domestic cargo this year and growth is being largely led by e-commerce business. The new terminal will bring better productivity and efficiency and we are also aiming to bring innovation and reduce dwell time," said a Mumbai International Airport Limited official.
Last year, the airport handled little over two lakh tonnes of domestic cargo and about five lakh tonnes of international cargo.
