Nomination filing ends for panchayat polls in state

With the process of filing of nominations for elections to the 5,476 gram panchayats to elect 88,245 members ending in Karnataka, Mysore district has witnessed a huge number of 18,070 nominations for 4,300 seats in 235 gram panchayats in seven taluks of the district.
Following the official calendar of events announced in the district on April 21, the process of receiving nominations had begun. It concluded on Wednesday when 18,070 nominations had been filed.
The taluks, number of panchayats, seats and number of nominations filed in the district are as follows: Mysore: 35 panchayats, 723 seats and 2,837 nominations. Nanjangud: 45, 802 and 3,136. T Narasipur: 36, 635 and 2,506. Hunsur: 30, 532 and 2,600. K R Nagar: 31, 534 and 2,542. Periyapatna: 26, 502 and 2,089. H D Kote: 32, 572 and 2,360. Nominations have not been received for two seats in T Narasipur taluk.
While scrutiny was held today, the nominations filed in Mysore and 14 other districts that go to polls on May 12 in the second phase of the grassroot elections. The last date for withdrawals will be May 3. Counting of votes will be on May 17 at the concerned taluk headquarters.
In the first phase, 16 districts, including Bangalore, will go to polls on May 8. The counting of votes will take place on May 17. Thus, it will be a state-wide counting of votes on May 17.
However, elections are not being conducted in 150 village panchayats in the state, as their terms expire after July 2010.
