Railways record 10% jump in Apr-Nov earnings

Railways today announced over 10% growth in earnings between April and November this fiscal, thanks to robust performance both in the goods and passenger segments.

"The total approximate earnings between April one and November 30, 2011 were Rs 66,126.39 crore as compared to Rs 59,994.24 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 10.22%," a statement issued by it said.

It said total goods earnings went up from Rs 39,855.04 crore during this period last year to Rs 43,888.10 crore this year, a hike of 10.12%.

Likewise, total passenger revenue earnings during first eight months of the financial year 2011-12 were Rs 18,742.53 crore as compared to Rs 17089.39 crore recorded during the same period last year. This was a jump of 9.67%, the statement said.

Revenue earnings from other departments amounted to Rs 1,860.46 crore during April- November, 2011 as compared to Rs 1668.15 crore during the same period last year, which was also an increase of 11.53%.

During this period, an increase of 5.24% was recorded in the approximate number of passengers travelling. This figure was 5,519 million as compared to 5,244 million during the same period last year.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked were 2,778 million and 2,741 million compared to 2,676 million and 2,569 million during the same period last year, the statement added.
