Railways register nearly 8% growth in earnings

Railways have earned nearly eight per cent more revenue in 2009-10 as compared to the earnings in the 2008-09 fiscal.

The total earnings of Indian Railways during the financial year 2009-10 were Rs 86,644.43 crore compared to Rs 80,264.60 crore during 2008-09, registering an increase of 7.95 per cent.

The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs 54,132.76 crore during April 1, 2008- March 31, 2009 to Rs 58,261.05 crore during the same period in 2009-10, registering an increase of 7.63 per cent.

The total passenger earnings during the fiscal 2009-10 were Rs 23,751.38 crore compared to Rs 21,978.34 crore during fiscal 2008-09, registering an increase of 8.07 per cent.

The earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 2,297.85 crore during April 2009-March 2010 compared to Rs 1,992.10 crore during the financial year 2008-09, registering an increase of 15.35 per cent.

Railways registered a growth in passenger segment also as the total approximate number of passenger bookings during April 2009-March 2010 was 7442.65 million compared to 7096.01 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 4.88 per cent.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passenger bookings during April 2009-March 2010 was 3860.85 million and 3581.80 million compared to 3789.03 million and 3306.98 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 1.90 per cent and 8.31 per cent respectively.
