SriLankan Cargo, cargo arm of SriLankan Airlines, has launched e-HAWB (electronic House Air Way Bill) in its web-based logistics system "" SriLankan Sky Chain.

SkyChain is the reservation and operations system pioneered by Emirates and consequently adopted by SriLankan Cargo in September 2001. This tool incorporates the supply chain from reservations to delivery of shipment.

SkyChain customers can check SriLankan Airlines' flight schedules and space availability, book online in real time, communicate with logistics suppliers, receive automatic notifications of the shipment's progress, print full air way bills from any location and print barcode labels.

"In a security conscious environment, we as cargo carriers need to facilitate information provision in time to enable free flow of goods," Nalin Rodrigo, head of cargo, SriLankan Cargo, said.

While the industry norm for submitting a manual HAWB is approximately $10, e-HAWB registered customers of SkyChain will pay a nominal charge when compared to the manual format.

The electronic transmission of HAWB and MAWB (Master Air Way bill) details are mandatory for shipments to the US, required by the US Bureau of Customs and Border Protection at least four hours prior to arrival of a shipment.
