Jayalalithaa makes fresh appeal to PM to address the power crisis in the state

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa once again urged the Union Government to address the power crisis in the state.

In a letter to the Prime Minister today, the Chief Minister made a  to relocate the entire quantum of surrendered power by the Delhifresh appeal Government to Tamil Nadu.

In the letter, the Chief Minister said the Government of Delhi had proposed to surrender power from various central generating stations for the period between November 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013. The quantum is estimated at 230 MW for 24 hours and 1,491 MW for six hours ending 6 am.

"The Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Limited (TANGEDCO) has requested the Union Ministry to arrange to provide the necessary corridor on priority basis for availing the power," she pointed out in the letter.

She added, that the state is facing a demand-supply gap of about 4,000 MW, the highest in the southern region, and widespread load shedding is being resorted to causing severe hardship to the consumers.

The agriculture sector has been amongst the worst hit due to the failure of the monsoon and inadequate power supply, thereby affecting food production.

"I have already pointed out that the deficit situation in Tamil Nadu has been aggravated due to corridor congestion and have repeatedly requested your urgent intervention to ensure that the required quantum of 1,000 MW of power transmission capacity made available to enable Tamil Nadu to receive the power contracted by the TANGEDCO," said the Chief Minister in the letter.
