Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu lead the pack for fatalities on National Highways

Centre, which announced Rs 11,000 crore spend to fix such black spots, has identified 726 of them across the country

Showing concern over high number of road accidents, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari announced to spend Rs 11,000 crore in the next five years to fix black spots. The Ministry has identified 726 black spots across the country which is major cause of accidents.

With 100 black spots each, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have the dubious distinction of highest number of black spots which were identified based on 2011, 2012 and 2013 fatalities on National Highways.

According to the data compiled by Transport Research Wing (TRW) of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways the total number of persons killed in road accidents increased from 137,572 in 2013 to 139,671 in 2014. (Click here for charts)
