The Gujarat BJP MLAs on Tuesday came to a consensus on who will lead Gujarat in case state chief minister and party’s prime ministerial nominee, Narendra Modi, moves on to New Delhi. Though the party will be formally declaring the name of the new chief minister only after the Lok Sabha elections are declared on May 16, BJP sources indicated that all the party MLA had come to consensus on name of revenue minister and Modi close aide Anandi Patel as the next state chief minister.

While the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh received an emotional farewell in New Delhi, Modi was given an informal farewell by his fellow MLAs at a meeting held in Gandhinagar today. All the 119 MLAs along with other party leaders including Gujarat in-charge Om Mathur and state party president R C Faldu were present during the meeting.

“The name of the new chief minister of Gujarat will be declared only after the results of the LS polls on May 16. The decision will be taken by BJP’s parliamentary board,” said BJP spokesperson Vijay Rupani after the meeting. He further said that there was no groupism in the state BJP and any decision by the party high command will be acceptable to all.

On the issues discussed during the meeting, party sources said, included the school enrolment drive, the agriculture fares and other flagship programmes initiated by Modi.

Sources in BJP further said that senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, former president Nitin Gadkari and party president Rajnath Singh are likely to meet Modi in Gandhinagar on Wednesday to discuss various scenarios emerging once the Lok Sabha results are out on May 16.

Earlier in the day, Modi also reviewed the ground situation of drinking water supply in the scarcity-hit areas of the state in peak summer. The main agenda for the meeting was for ensuring adequate water supply to scarcity-hit areas, particularly the Saurashtra and Kutch regions, through Narmada canals and other resources, including tankers.

According to an official release, Modi asked district administration to take all necessary steps to ensure adequate supply. He also said that water distribution across the state be centrally monitored from the state secretariat.

All district collectors have been empowered to take necessary step to ensure adequate water supply in their districts. Modi asked water resources department to collect information on a daily basis as to the quantity of water distributed.
