Congress leader Manish Tewari Monday brushed aside speculation about party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi's resignations after the party's disastrous performance in the general election.
"I don't think that resignations and designations are the way forward. The Congress Working Committee is the highest decision making body of the party... So I think it should be allowed to meet," Tewari told Times Now news channel.
The Congress Working Committee will meet in the capital Monday, days after the party registered its worst ever performance in a general election winning only 44 Lok Sabha seats.
The meeting of the party's apex decision making body, which will be chaired by Sonia Gandhi, is expected to discuss the reasons behind its defeat.
Tewari also said the election results were "extremely disappointing" and the CWC should be allowed to come to certain tentative conclusions.
"... because what is most important is not what went wrong for the Congress, but also what went right for the opposition. Therefore, there is a need for an exhaustive process of analysis, exhaustive process of introspection," he added.
Party leader Renuka Chowdhary agreed and said: "We will review, rewind and introspect."
She termed speculation about Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi's resignations as "bizarre".
"Why should they," she asked.
