ICICI Bank has maintained its pace of disbursements in the home loan market and continues to lead Housing Development Finance Corporation.

The private bank had overtaken HDFC in disbursements in 2003-04 as well.

In the first nine months of 2004 the retail bank disbursed loans worth Rs 13,147 crore while HDFC (although its third quarter numbers are not out yet) is expected to give out Rs 10,719 crore.

This is a number extrapolated on the expectation that HDFC's disbursements in Q3 will be 30 per cent higher than that of the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. This is typically the pace at which the institution has grown. HDFC will announce its Q3 results on January 25.

However, when it comes to the outstanding loan book, HDFC is ahead at Rs 31,938 crore as on September 30, 2004 while that of ICICI Bank's outstanding figure as on December 31, 2004 was smaller at Rs 23,500 crore. In 2003-04, ICICI Bank's home loan disbursements had grown 4.58 per cent faster than that of HDFC's.

If one compares the first two quarters of this fiscal the trend continues. In Q1 2004-05, ICICI Bank disbursed Rs 3,855 crore and HDFC Rs 2,732 crore; in Q2, ICICI Bank disbursed Rs 4,360 crore and HDFC Rs 4,251 crore; in Q3 ICICI Bank disbursed Rs 4,900 crore while HDFC is expected to give out Rs 3,736 crore (this is 30 per cent higher than Rs 2,874 crore which is disbursed in Q3 of 2003-04).

Half of ICICI Bank's retail portfolio (Rs 46,194 crore) consists of home loans. The retail bank has over 60 per cent of its total advances in retail.

The home loan market has been growing at a steady 40 per cent with all banks and housing finance companies hungry to have a piece of the growing pie.
