PSU banks seek Teradata services

Teradata, which primarily operates in enterprise sectors which are competitive, feels that the financial sector in India is developing fast.
With the rapid roll-out of core banking solutions, the availability of accurate and feedable data has increased, feels Stephen Brobst, chief technology officer, Teradata.
"In India, majority of our business comes from the telecom sector, followed by the banking and finances sector. However, the only Indian bank that we work with currently happens to be ICICI, which is a private sector bank. So far we have not worked with any nationalised bank in India. However, queries are pouring in from that sector, since our product can assist them in analysing data and assist in decision making processes like identifying potential locations for new branches," said Brobst.
The company is also awaiting the Indian retail sector to become more organised and mature and have more electronic points of sale before approaching potential clients. However, retail and manufacturing are high up on the list of sectors that Teradata is looking into currently.
"With the recent joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and Walmart, we are looking at doing good business in this sector in India, Walmart is already our client and they will provide back-end support in terms of setting up cold chains to Bharti. However, we are doing our best to educate the Indian retail segment and other industries regarding the advantages of having data warehousing facility to beat competition," Brobst said.
Teradata, which has not targeted the manufacturing industry yet, is keen on getting in talks with automobile manufacturers.
The logistics sector is also an emerging area that the company wants to focus on with an accent on airlines, a sector which has become increasingly competitive over the last two years, said Brobst.
Teradata, which provides hardware, software and services for data warehousing and decision support systems, had so far limited its operations to the north and west of the country.
However, it is testing markets in the east and south before setting up operations in these regions.
In the east, it plans to focus on the manufacturing sector.
