All the employees of the Surat Peoples Bank wore black strips as a mark of protest. The employees gathered outside the main branch of the bank at Parsi Sheri and staged protests.
The employees made representations to the state labour commissioner, assistant labour commissioner, commissioner of police, state registrar, and the district registrar (co-operatives), against the bank management.
A large number of employees also held a meeting outside the bank's head office at Nanpura this evening, demanding immediate reinstatement of their suspended colleague.
"Vasant Mohite, working as peon in the Surat Peoples Bank, was suspended by the bank management on March 25, over a very small reason. Our issue is not the suspension, but the fact that the suspension was illegal. contrary to the rules. No memo or show-cause notice was issued to the employee by the bank management," Natu Patel, president, Bank Kamdaar Sangh, said.
"We have decided to continue our agitation till the management realises its mistake, and revokes the suspension order," he added. The employees of Surat Peoples Bank have decided to start relay fasts from tomorrow.
Surat Peoples Bank Chairman Dilip Gajjar, however, termed the protests as unfortunate.
"The bank is paying excellent salaries to its staff. Our salary standards are better than any other private or nationalised bank. When we are paying so much money, we can expect the employees of be honest with their work. This was not the case with Mohite, as he was not following the timings, and was very much undisciplined, which led to his suspension," Gajjar told Business Standard.
"We would conduct an inquiry against Mohite. If he is found to be innocent, his suspension would be revoked. The other employees of Surat Peoples Bank have to understand that there is no point in protesting against a step, which is in the bank's interest," he added.
