Bike maker Honda has bagged a patent for an article storage structure to accommodate articles in a leg shield, in a scooter-type vehicle.

The storage structure will have two sections separately placed within the left and right sides of the leg shield, of which the storage case in one section can be pulled out and removed.

The patent application was filed in September, 2004. A First Examination Report (FER) was issued in June 2010, with various objections, according to which the company brought in changes to comply with the requirements.

The invention is related to an article storage structure for a scooter-type vehicle, capable of accommodating articles in a leg shield covering a head pipe that steerably supports a front wheel and a steering handle, from the rear side, the company said.

The storage structure comprises of two sections separately placed within left and right sides of the leg shield, and the first article storage section has a storage case capable of being pulled out and removed from the leg shield, while the second storage section including a storage recess portion formed in the leg shield and covered with a lid member to be freely opened and closed, the lid member being hinged to the leg shield, and the storage case is formed to be larger than the storage recess portion. There would also be a lock mechanism to switch between connection and disconnection of the storage case and the leg shield, using a key.

The storage case could be inserted and removed and the leg shield integrally forms as a storage wall, which is formed in a rectangular tube so as to be continuous to the opening portion. The end wall of the storage wall is provided with a maintenance window, would allow changing a bulb of each headlight. The company filed a reply to the examination report and company submitted the retyped pages making its first claim definitive and deleting another claim, in the final hearing.
