Deakin University, one of Australia's premier research institutions plans to set up a research institute in India in partnership with an Indian university to conduct research in the areas of nanotechnology and biotechnology.

The university has shortlisted four cities, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi for establishing a research centre. "We will set up the research institute in partnership with an Indian university or research institute. We have already had talks with the Chennai University and the Hyderabad based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology.for establishing the research institute," Peter Hodgson, Faculty of engineering and science, Deakin University, said.

The research would be jointly conducted by Deakin University and the Indian research partner. Students from the Indian research institute would conduct the research jointly with the guest faculty from Deakin University.

However, the university has not yet decided on the model for the ownership of Intellectual Property Right (IPR).

"There are different models that we can adopt for IPR ownership. We could follow either the royalty model or a shareholding model. The modalities have not yet been decided," Hodgson, said. Hodgson said Australia's leadership in biomedical and pharmaceutical research offered opportunities for research in other areas.

"We want to explore a lot more ideas and we want to leverage India's large knowledge pool for this," he added. According to Hodgson, the proposed research institute could be a gateway for Australian companies interested in doing research in India.

There are several Australian companies interested in making India a potential hub for R&D, since conducting research in India is cheaper. With the proposed research institute, Australian companies might find it easier to set up research labs in India, Hodgson, added.

Deakin also recently signed an MoU with IIT Powai for joint Research and Development activities.
