The government has allowed an additional 50,000 tonne of onions to be exported by the end of August, taking the total exports permitted this fiscal year to 250,000 tonne.
In a notification issued on Friday, the commerce department said that the quantity of onions released will have to be exported by August 31.
It also said that the shipment period of the balance 50,000 metric tonne released for export in June has been extended till August 31.
Only the designated agencies are allowed to export onions. These include the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (17,500 metric tonne), the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (17,500 metric tonne), the Gujarat Agro Industries Cooperation Ltd (5,000 metric tonne), the Karnataka State Cooperative Marketing Federation (2,000 metric tonne), the National Cooperative Consumers
