Demanding further revision of the minimum support price for sugar cane, the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) today threatened to launch an agitation in support of sugarcane growers if the current prices were not hiked.
The minimum support price of Rs 205 and Rs 210 per quintal announced by the Uttar Pradesh government yesterday is not acceptable to the farmers as it favours sugar mill owners and not the cane growers, BKU President Mahandra Singh Tikait said.
The organisation will not hesitate to launch an agitation if the government fails to provide minimum support price of less than Rs 300 per quintal, he said.
The farmers would take their produce to neighbouring states like Haryana and Uttaranchal to get better support price for sugar cane is SAP is not hiked, he said.
