Coffee production is expected to go up by 9% in 2013-14

The final crop estimate based on crop harvest data for 2012-13 year is placed at 3.18 lakh tonnes

Coffee production in the country is expected to increase by 9.05% to 3.47 lakh tonnes in the year 2013-14, on account of normal blossom showers in all major coffee growing areas, according to government data.
 
The final crop estimate based on crop harvest data for 2012-13 year is placed at 3.18 lakh tonnes, the Coffee Board said in the latest data release.
 
The board has projected 12.88% increase in the production of Arabica variety to 1.11 lakh tonnes for the current year, while production of Robusta is expected to go up by 7.47% to 2.36 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 year.
 
Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are three major coffee producing states, with combined output accounting for 98% of the total output.
 
Coffee production in Karnataka is estimated to increase by 8.21% to 2.49 lakh tonnes, in Kerala it is expected to increase by 9.89% to 70,550 tonnes and in Tamil Nadu it is expected to increase by 10.10% to 1,755 tonnes, compared to the previous 2012-13 season's final estimate.
 
Coffee production from non-traditional areas of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa and North Eastern Region for the year 2013-14 is expected to go up by 28.57% to 1,780 tonnes from the final estimate of production in 2012-13.
 
Every year assessment of crop production is done at the time of blossom period during the month of April-June.
 
India accounts for about 4% of world coffee production and exports.
