The world coffee exports dipped by 9.36 per cent to 21.3 million bags in the first three months of the 2009-10 coffee year (October to September), the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) said.

The global coffee exports stood at 23.5 million bags (1 bag contains 60 kg of coffee) in the same period last year. The ICO said poor shipments from leading exporters Brazil, Vietnam and Columbia led to the fall.

According to the ICO, the shipment from Brazil, the world’s leading coffee exporter, dipped to 7.93 million bags during the first three months of the 2009-10 season. In the same period a year ago, Brazil had exported 9.26 million bags.

Vietnam, the world’s second biggest exporter of the commodity, shipped 3.57 million bags, marginally down from 3.87 million bags.

Columbia also recorded a decline to 1.93 million bags from 2.76 million bags.

However, Indonesia exported a slightly higher quantity of coffee during the period under review. Its shipments rose to 1.55 million bags from 1.38 million bags.

In 2009 calendar year, the world coffee exports were to the tune of 94.7 million bags against 97.7 million bags in previous year, the ICO said.

The global coffee production is estimated to be lower at 123 million bags in 2009-10 season, it added.
