NAFED starts selling onions at 35/kg via mobile outlets

To provide relief to consumers here, agri-cooperative NAFED today started the sale of onions at a subsidised rate of Rs 35/kg via mobile vans which will be continued till retail prices come down.

Currently, retail prices of onion are ruling over Rs 60/kg in the capital.

 NAFED Chairman Bijender Singh flagged off 15 mobile vans near Azadpur mandi here to dispatch onions to the different colonies for sale.  

On the first day, each mobile outlets will sell 500 kg of onions in colonies like Rohini-Ranibagh, Raja Garden-Kirti Nagar, Janakpuri-Dwarka, ITO-Vidhana Soudha, Mayur Vihar-Samachar apartments, Moti Bagh-R K Puram, INA-Kidwai Nagar and CGO Complex in Delhi, according to NAFED.

From tomorrow, the number of mobile vans will increase to 100 and also the quantity of sale of onion by each mobile outlet would be raised to 2,000 kg, it said.

NAFED has been selling onions at Rs 35/kg for last few days at its five stores located at Ashram, Laurence Road, Krishi Bhavan and Khel Gaon.

Singh said the Delhi government has assured it will bear the transportation cost of mobile outlets for onion sale.

The Centre has agreed to compensate 30 per cent of losses that NAFED would suffer in selling onion at cheaper rates. NAFED has been told to procure onions from Maharashtra and Gujarat, where arrival has increased and prices are also low.
