The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) chaired by Ajay Shankar, a retired IAS officer, has convened its maiden meeting on July 2 to review the Textile Policy and discuss the roadmap of the final report on the National Fibre Policy.

Confirming the development in the sidelines of the 57th National Garment Fair in Mumbai, A B Joshi, Textile Commissioner said,
“The Council is set to discuss a roadmap to achieve the textile export target of $50 billion by FY 2015 as set by the ministry.”

The removal of 10% excise duty on branded readymade garments has provided a much needed fillip to the industry which helped the sector moving upwards again towards the growth path, Joshi added.

“With the roadmaps for growth in place, the Rs 200,000 crore Indian apparel industry will be doubled in five years provided the government eases administrative procedures and reduces interest rates at par with IT and agriculture sector,” said Rahul Mehta, president, The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI).
