The 1.5-litre diesel already exists in Mahindra's current range of engines, however this will be further enhanced with inputs from Ssangyong engineers. The last is the 1.0-litre petrol engine, which is likely to be a turbocharged mill and this will its new petrol engine with direct injection technology. The recent diesel de-regulation will see a shift of a good percentage of buyers towards petrol in the compact SUV segment.
The recently unveiled Ssangyong Tivoli gets the 1.6-litre petrol engine, while the new S101 (Mahindra's competition to the For Ecosport) will get the 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel. The next-generation Bolero (U301) will get the same 1.5-litre diesel engine like the S101. The new Bolero will be targeting the rural market, while the S101 has been designed and engineered for an urban commuter.
Both these compact SUVs will be manufactured in Mahindra's Chakan plant, which is at the moment undergoing an expansion. The company has invested Rs 40 billion for this expansion to increase the current capacity by 4 lakh units. The production is likely to be completed in this year itself after the launch of the new Bolero and the S101.
We recently spotted the Mahindra Thar. Some images of that.
