A total of 80 political prisoners of Sudan, arrested during protests against rising food prices, have been released.

This was confirmed by Sudan's presidential assistant Abdul Rahman Alsadig Alamahdi on Sunday evening.

Addressing a press conference at Kober prison in country's capital Khartoum, Alamahdi said that the presidency has ordered the release of all political detainees in the country, and added the remaining would be released when their procedures are finished.

"As we announced today, with the release of all political detainees, we do believe that this is a declaration of a new political era in our country, an era of freedoms and human rights," he was quoted as saying by Anadolu Agency.

Over 300 opposition activists were arrested last month as government cracked the whip on protestors, the opposition claimed.

Earlier, the U.S embassy in Sudan stated that the hundreds of political leaders, activists and civilians were being kept in detention under inhumane conditions by the authorities

Sudanese authorities have adopted strict measures to curb protests and anti-government demonstrations tha spread across Sudan since January, over the hike in food prices.
