Around 800 passengers, who had been stuck on a launch in the Meghna River in Bangladesh for 14 hours, were rescued on Saturday.

The vessel - MV Sattar Khan - had hit a hidden shoal in the Haim Char upazila of Chandpur last night, reports the Daily Star.

The Dhaka to Patuakhali-bound launch was grounded at Aktel Point in the river around 11 p.m.

The vessel was found only at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and stranded passengers were thereafter rescued by local trawlers and by another launch, MV Rof Rof.

A majority of the passengers reported sick, as they had been starving since last night.
