England batsman Joe Root gave a glimmer of hope to his team as he remained unbeaten on 67 to give England a chance to win the Adelaide Test.

At the end of Day 4's play, England was 176-4 after 62 overs, with Root and Chris Woakes (5) at the crease. England need a further 178 runs with six wickets left in hand to win the Test match and level the series 1-1.

Earlier, Australia resuming on 53-4, collapsed further to be bundled out for just 138. James Anderson was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 5 for 43. Woakes chipped in with figures of 4 for 36.

The Australian batsmen struggled throughout their innings, particularly due to swinging conditions during the late afternoon hours. Usman Khwaja and Mitchell Starc were the only batsmen to cross 20 runs.

Earlier, Australia declared their first innings on 442-8 and bowled out England for 227, handing Australia a huge 225-run lead. However, they squandered the advantage to allow England to take their chances of winning the game.

It would be interesting to see that who would take the honours tomorrow in this evenly poised Test match.

Australia are currently leading the Ashes series by 1-0, after clinching a huge 10-wicket win over England in the opening Test in Brisbane.
