'Aggressive' China, Russia pose 'serious security concerns', says US military report

Terming China and Russia as 'aggressive,' a new report released by the U.S. military has said that the two countries threaten the North American nation's security interests.

The report, which was released by Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman General Martin Dempsey, also warned that there was a 'low but growing' probability of the U.S. fighting a war with a major power, with 'immense' consequences, reported The Guardian.

It noted that Russia had 'repeatedly' demonstrated that it lacked a sense of respect for its neighbours' sovereignty and was willing to use force to achieve its goals. Referring to Russian troops' presence in conflict-torn eastern Ukraine, the report said, "Russia's military actions are undermining regional security directly and through proxy forces."

The document expressed concerns about states developing advanced technological capabilities that were challenging the competitive advantages long held by the U.S. such as early warning and precision strikes.

Pointing towards China's land reclamation activities in the South China Sea, the report said that Beijing's actions were spiking tension in the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition to Russia and China, the report also highlighted Iran and North Korea's nuclear capabilities and listed them as countries that posed 'serious security concerns' to the U.S. and its allies.
