Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh on Friday reiterated his demand to convert the government bungalow of his late father and former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh into a memorial.

Singh justified his demands by saying that when other leaders like Babu Jagjivan Ram and Lal Bahadur Shastri have memorials, there should be one for Chaudhary Charan Singh also.

"There are memorials for Babu Jagjivan Ram, Lal Bahadur Shashtri and Kanshiram, so, there must be one for Chaudhary Charan Singh. Farmers from across the nation have been coming here with their problems, they all see this place as 'Chaudharyji's' house and I have always kept the door open for them," Singh told ANI here.

"The farmers feel that this place should become Chaudhary Charan Singh's memorial. Ever since he moved into this bunglow in 1978, and even after his death when I was living here, farmers from all over the country used to come here," he added.

The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) had earlier issued Ajit Singh an eviction notice to vacate the government bungalow in which he has been staying from the past 36 years after former Prime Minister Choudhary Charan Singh passed away.

After he failed to vacate the bungalow, the NDMC disconnected the water and power supply to the government bungalow sighting the reason as overstaying.

In retaliation, Singh's supporters, mainly farmers, took to the streets in protest.

On Thursday, members of Bhartiya Kisan Union along with Rashtriya Lok Dal supporters marched towards the Gangnahar Muradnagar regulator in an attempted to cut off water supply to Delhi, but were prevented by the police who had to resort to baton charge and the use of water cannons to disperse the protestors.
