Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble on Friday extended his sympathies and condolences to the family of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, who passed away after being struck by a cricket ball on November 25.

"It is a sad day for the cricketing world. Phillip Hughes's death on the cricketing pitch was by a bouncer and our deepest sympathies and condolences are with his family and friends. I knew Phil briefly when he was part of the Mumbai Indians family," Kumble said to the media.

"Our prayers and thoughts and support are also with Sean Abbot," he added, referring to the bowler who bowled the fatal ball.

Twenty-five-year-old Hughes passed away on Thursday after being struck by a bouncer bowled by pacer Abbot at the Sydney Cricket Ground Oval.

The South Australian batsman, who was pushing for a Test recall against India in Brisbane next week, was knocked out after the ball made impact under his helmet behind his left ear and had been in a critical condition in intensive care before passing away.
