Assam remembers 2008 serial blast victims

The family members and close relatives of terror victims, who lost their lives in the devastating 2008 serial blasts, gathered at a memorial pillar here to pay tribute to them.

Around 100 people were killed and many others seriously injured in the serial blasts triggered by militants at three crowded places in Guwahati city besides Kokrajhar, Barpeta Road and Bongaigaon in Assam.

To mark the occasion, a musical troupe performed religious songs for peace and tranquility.

"I feel very sad for those who were killed in 2008 blast. We pray for them. May the departed souls rest in peace," said Basanta Bayan, a priest.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) organised a candle light protest against terrorism in Guwahati. A large number of students participated in the march and raised anti-terrorism slogans.

"2008 blasts were very painful and I hope these incidents wouldn't repeat in future. If there are some demands, these need to be discussed with the government instead of raising violence and bomb blasts," said Tanushree Sarkar, one of the protestors.

"Today we are protesting against those who disrupted our lives in 2008 serial blasts in Guwahati," said AASU leader Simanta Thakuria.

The banned anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) was involved in the serial blasts.
